Utility of Squeegee

Squeegee has been originated during the middle age as a tool made out of wood used by the fishermen to clean their boat deck from fish guts and was called ‘squilgee’.

Later on, in the early twentieth century the cleaning professionals started using the Chicago squeegee, which was a bulky tool, having two stiff pink blades fixed with twelve screws.

The heavy and cumbersome Chicago squeegee was proven very useful for cleaning of windows. But the weight of the tool created discomfort for easy handling. It was then an Italian immigrant in the USA named Ettore Steccone, who brought revolution in the world of squeegee by inventing a light weight, handy squeegee which was accepted widely by the cleaning professionals.

They quickly realized that the tool was superior to the Chicago squeegee. This gave birth to the new company named Ettore. It is still considered as one of the most popular window cleaning equipment manufacturing company today.

The Ettore squeegee was a light weight, brass tools with a single flexible rubber blade convenient for easy clean. The efficient design of this tool  remained basically unchanged for a long period of time. As the squeegees are exposed to the water constantly, brass was used because it is rust proof.

The standard window cleaning service was preferred to be done by using Ettore squeegee by the professionals. Later on, in due course, the manufacturers switched over to stainless steel handles and channels. As a metal, stainless steel is a stronger and lighter metal in comparison to brass.

It was definitely a step-ahead decision as one can get a longer squeegee to use for reaching out to a higher place handling the same weight.

Though metal is a durable material, it has its limitation too. In the time of freezing cold, the metal handles of squeegee absorb cold too. It becomes difficult for the people to handle a freezing cold squeegee. To resolve this issue, the squeegee manufacturer started manufacturing very tough handles and light weight squeegee for window cleaners. These new-type squeegees are lighter in weight and very easy to grip.

There are many other window cleaning products used for the cleaning purpose. Some of them are dish washing solution, scrubber, spot removing solution, vinegar solution etc. Window cleaning supplies also include ladders of different types, lint-free cloth, water-fed poles, etc.

It is said that the water-fed poles are used to clean the windows safely up to a height of sixty feet from the ground. The quick release of the levers in squeegee technology is very useful for the window cleaners. This technology allows the cleaning professionals to slide out the channel and change the rubber, which needs to be changed fairly frequently, without the use of tools.

This procedure is time saving too. There are various kinds of squeegee available in the market, applicable for different kinds of jobs. Besides, the most popular window squeegee, there are stiff blade squeegee used in applying grouting to the tiles, floor squeegee for cleaning the floor in a big place and hospitals, horse scrapper squeegee used for cleaning the dust and the sweats from the horse’s coats, and the silk screen squeegees.
