Ergonomic Chair –An Alternate to Normal Chair

Sitting at a desk whole day or before the computer has its effect on the back, neck, shoulders, spine and lower back. Be it a 9 to 5 desk job or work from home job, sitting for long hours at one place watching television and following a sedentary lifestyle causes fatigue, pain and induces stress in the body causing many health problems. Sitting might be relaxing but it actually transfers the whole upper body weight to the hip, lower lumbar and thigh region thereby making it prone to problems. Prolonged sitting causes back and neck related problems, eye strain, joint pains, leg pain and abdominal pains. The solution to all these problems lies in changing the sitting posture, taking medications and changing the chair altogether.

One can look for an ergonomic chair that reduces the pain caused due to stress and prolonged sitting. Ergonomics is the study of modifying a product for use by humans. Ergonomic chair is a piece of furniture designed based on the study. Physical characteristics of humans like height, weight, body mass index are taken into consideration while designing an ergonomic chair. The chair is designed in such way that it provides comfort and rest to the body and keeps the back stress free. There are many health benefits by using an ergonomic chair.

An ergonomic chair corrects the sitting posture of a person; reduces the strain on the back, neck and hip region; and makes sitting at the desk easy and comfortable. The chairs are user friendly, eco friendly and flexible. Ergonomic chairs have various features which gives a comfortable posture to the body without slouching. The chair has a head rest, back rest and an arm rest to sit straight in the chair. The height of the chair from the ground can be adjusted so that one is able to sit comfortably with the feet rested firmly on the floor.

This solves many blood circulation related problems. The chairs have pneumatic levers which can be adjusted manually to raise or lower the chair according to a person’s height. The head rest in the chair supports the head and neck in case one wants to stretch out. The backrest supports the spine and the lumbar region and helps one recline in the chair giving a comfortable feeling. Few chairs also provide lumbar support to the lower spine. Chairs in which the seat and the backrest are as a single piece, the backrest should be adjustable in 90 degrees and angular to provide a comfortable posture. Arm rests have to be adjustable so that the arms rest comfortably on it and the shoulders are relaxed to maintain a normal posture.

Ergonomic chairs have good seat depth and give a cushiony feeling while sitting. The seat depth supports the hips and buttocks thereby reducing the pressure on the hip region. The material on the seat must provide good padding while sitting. Seats made of cloth fabrics have good padding and are suitable for prolonged sitting. The swivel feature in the chair helps one move, rotate and stretch in any direction. The chairs have adjustable features so that different sized people can sit on the chair comfortably.
