Black cravat: How to wear your cravat

Back in 1660 the cravat made its first appearance in Paris and was commonly worn amongst the noblest amongst society (those guys with the big wigs and frilly collars)!  This didn’t change over the centuries, and even by the 19th and early 20th century, cravats were for the rich upper class people, and not something the working man would wear.

Now, however, things have changed.  Cravats are becoming increasingly more popular especially amongst the horse race goers and wedding planners, and is now a front runner when it comes to keeping your neck warm and adding a touch of class to your outfit.

One of the great things about a cravat is that it means for those men out there who don’t like to have their shirts buttoned right up to their throat, they can now avoid doing that as the cravat hides a multitude of sins.  So if you are wearing a crisp white shirt over and grey suit, your black cravat can make a perfect alternative to wearing a tie or bow tie.

If you have decided to buy a black cravat then it’s important that you wear the right colour suit with this.  Black cravats look best with either a black or grey suit.  But if you don’t want a totally plain black cravat, Simon and Simon have a perfect alternative in their black polka dot cravat in silk.  Smooth and sleek, this black cravat adds a touch of fun to your outfit with its white polka dots.

So how do you actually tie a cravat?

This is often one of the things many men wonder when they are faced with wearing a black cravat for the first time.  But it’s actually a lot easier than you think:

1.    First off, you need to place the cravat over your shoulders resting on your chest, leaving one length slightly longer than the other.

2.    Next step is to cross the longer length over the shorter one, but make sure you keep the cravat tight against your neck.

3.    After that, you pull the longer length through from behind and repeat this with the longer length until you place it behind the knot.

4.    And then finally you just need to ruche it up by pulling the same piece through again and laying it on the shorter length.

A black cravat can add a real touch of class to your look, making you really stand out from the crowd.
